What should I expect from a neuropsychological assessment?

An assessment is typically made up of 3 parts, over 3 - 4 sessions, based on the reason for referral.

Clinical Interview

During this session, the psychologist asks questions regarding the reason for referral, current concerns, and personal and family history. It's helpful to bring someone with you who knows you well and may be able to contribute. If this isn't possible, the psychologist will request your permission to contact someone for collateral information.

Testing

Different areas of your cognitive functioning will be assessed such as your attention, concentration, memory, visuospatial skills, language, processing speed, and motor functioning. Questionnaires regarding your emotional functioning may also be given to you to complete. Testing is usually split over two sessions to help you perform at your best.

Feedback and Report

This session is usually 2 - 3 weeks after testing is complete. You may have someone accompany you if you wish and you'll be able to ask any questions you might have. With your consent, feedback and the report are given to the referring doctor and/or doctor managing your care. In the case of a minor, with your consent, feedback and a redacted report can be given to their school.
