What are neuropsychological tests?

Neuropsychological tests are evidence-based measures to help qualified clinicians assess cognitive functions such as attention and concentration, working memory, speed of thinking, motor skills, short and long-term memory, language, visuo-spatial skills, and executive functioning, such as planning, problem-solving, and abstract reasoning. Tests are usually paper and pen based but can also be computer-based.

When test results are compared to appropriate population norms, the clinician can understand whether the individual has performed below average, within range, or above average compared to others from a similar background. Where appropriate norms are not available, as is often the case in South Africa, the clinician uses his or her judgment in combination with qualitative observation and integration of other relevant information, to help put together a cognitive profile that aligns with a diagnosis.
